#1 Do a Pre-Pack Photo Shoot
You think you’ll remember where all those cords behind the TV went and how you had that bookshelf so tidily arranged but by the time you get around to emptying those boxes you will have forgotten, trust me. Save time, energy and your sanity by taking some pre-packing photos (of everything) so you'll know exactly where it all goes. With photos in hand, you'll be able to recreate it all in record time.
#2 Create a "Moving Toolbox"
Pack small box to keep your box cutter, tape, labeling markers, and other packing supplies in one carry-all that you can take from room to room. It's easy to misplace small and essential items like these when your house is full of boxes and in disarray. Having them all in one place will help you pack more efficiently.
#3 Corral Cords With Toilet Paper Rolls
Corral cords using rolls from toilet paper or paper towels and then make sure you keep them handy during your move along with your toolbox.
#4 First Night Box
Pack a separate box for items that you will need the first night toiletries, pajamas, next days clothes, etc… This is the only box you really need to know where it is so have it marked clearly. I would suggest keeping it apart from all other boxes. I would also add a first aid to this box and a small tool box (box cutter, screwdrivers, hammer, extension cords, etc..)
#5 Keep Parts with their Home
Keep power cords with their respective appliances so you don’t have the guessing game of trying to match them up later. This goes for small parts. Store hardware including specialty tools like Allen keys in sandwich bags and tape them directly to the item they belong to along with the power cord. This will make unpacking go more smoothly.
#6 Color-Code Boxes
Assign a color to each room, then mark that color on the outside of each box. Then the day of moving add the correct color label to each room door. This will make moving simple and fast for both you and the movers.
#7 Cut Handles in Boxes
Cut holes into the sides of cardboard boxes to create handles that'll simplify lifting and carrying. Be sure not to make holes too close to the top, or on too-heavy boxes, or they could rip.
#8 Pack Boxes in Layers
When packing items in kitchen or desk drawers, consider putting packing material between each layer. This will keep things from drawer separate and will make unpacking easier.
