Tasty Treat: Apples!

Jill Doucet

It's that time of year for apple picking!  Who am I kidding?  It's more about hot cider and cider donuts than it is about actually picking apples.  Looking for some local treats?

Petsi Pies makes a few different versions of Apple Pie from your simple Classic Apple Pie to Apple, Pear, Cranberry Pie and Salted Caramel Apple Pie.  Located in Cambridge & Somerville.

Red Apple Farm has great BBQ sauce (regular or hot), Apple Butter, Cider Donuts & Hot Apple Salsa, all sold in Boston Public Market or delivered right to your home.  Go for a Sunday drive and visit the farm in Phillipston they have hayrides, educational tours, farm animals & of course apple picking.

Hard Cider - As many of you know, I love hard cider and two of my favorites are Bantam Cider & Carr's Ciderhouse.  Bantam Cider, located in Somerville has several distinctive ciders as well as a ginger beer.  Americain, my favorite for the fall, is blended with cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon making it perfect for this time of year.  Bantam can be purchased at a number of retailers through out Massachusetts or visit their taproom Friday - Sunday. Carr's Ciderhouse are wild fermented ciders often dry and makes for a nice substitute for wine with a fall dinner.  Carr's Ciderhouse also makes cider syrup, cider vinegar & switchel, all of which can be purchased at multiple farmer's markets and retailers throughout Massachusetts or on their website.

Tipping Cow Ice Cream has a few old standbys, however I love them for their creative unique flavors.  Flavors for autumn include Apple Cider Sorbet & Jean's Apple Pie.  I can't wait to try a scoop of Jean's Apple Pie along side a scoop of Bourbon Caramel (another fall flavor).  Located on Medford St, Somerville, MA.

Apples are also great just they way they are.  Paired with cheese or peanut butter they make a terrific healthy snack.  Also, good on sandwiches or in salads and smoothies for added nutrition.
