Realty Craving: Moving Tips #6 Moving Schedule

Jill Doucet

Two Months Before

  • Go through items in your home to see if there are any items you can get rid of (see list of charities to donate items)

  • As you are going through items, take note of any valuable items that may need special packing or extra insurance coverage, such as TVs, paintings, etc...

  • Research moving companies and get estimates

  • Create a folder either paper or on computer to keep moving quotes and receipts all together

  • Arrange to have school records transferred to your child’s new school district.

Six Weeks Before

  • Gather or purchase boxes and other packing supplies (see post Moving on a Budget)

  • Start using items that you won’t want to move - perishable foods, cleaning supplies, etc...

  • Know the measurements of your new home so you can check to see that larger pieces of furniture will fit in their appropriate rooms, through door ways, or tight stair cases.

One Month Before

  • Fill out a change of address from your local post office or online. Or use Updater a free service I provide to all my clients.

  • Decide on a moving company, confirm dates and get written confirmation of all costs and details of your move.

  • Start alerting the following companies about your move:

  1. Banks

  2. Credit Cards

  3. Insurance Companies

  4. Utility Companies

  5. HR Dept at work

  6. Doctors, Veterinarians and other health care providers (have medical records transferred if you are relocating)

  7. Magazine and newspaper subscriptions (if not using Updater, try www.oneswitch.com)

  8. Start packing infrequently used items.  Note any items of special value.  Your moving company will want a list of any items valued at over $100 per pound (a computer, for example) in writing if you purchased supplemental insurance.

Two Weeks Before

  • If relocating, have car serviced and clear out safe-deposit box and put contents in a safe box to take with you in the car.

One Week Before

  • Fill any prescriptions you might need in the next couple of weeks.

  • Aim to finish packing a day or two before the moving date, have boxes labeled. Pack and clearly mark an “essentials” box of items you’ll need immediately.

  • Set aside things you’ll personally transport to your new home, such as jewelry and important files. Have a "first night” bag packed for each family member with toiletries and clothing for a couple of days.

A Few Days Before

  • If you’re moving your refrigerator, empty, clean, and defrost it at least 24 hours before your move.

  • Reconfirm the moving-day arrival time and other details (such as your cell phone number) with the moving company.

  • If you are not paying by credit card, get cash, cashier’s check or money order to pay & tip the movers

  • Ask the new occupants of your home to watch out for mail after you move—and check in with them after two weeks, and again after a month.

Day of the Move

  • Make sure the truck that shows up is from the moving company you hired. It should have the same USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) number painted on the side that you were given when you collected the estimate. (Bait-and-switch scams are not unheard-of.)

  • Plan to be home for the entire time it takes the movers to get you packed and loaded.

  • Before the movers leave, sign and keep a copy of the mover’s bill of lading/inventory list.
